Carew, Mason Win Inaugural Race
High tempatures and humidity greet runners

Dracut, MA - Dracut High School cross country and track star Artie Carew outran the rest of the field to win the inaugural Lakeview 5K Summer Series. On the women's side, Somerville Road Runner Aileen Mason paced the women's field in her victory.

In the master division, Dracuteer Diane Geehan took top female honors while Tyngsboro's own Michael Lemire took the men's division.

In the men's senior division Roger (Mr. Bean) Lavassuer easily cruised to victory.

Runners found little relief from the high heat and humidity along the shores of Lake Muscuppic on this warm summer evening. Hopefully next week cooler conditions will prevail. The top five men and women at this week's race were awarded t-shirts.

Week Number Two -- The Level Playing Field
Week number two is age graded and gender adjustment night. The top six finishers using USATF age grading and a gender adjustment factor will win an award. Age graded results are produced by adjusting each runner's time based on age. The National Masters News and the World Association of Veteran Athletes (WAVA) have produced tables to allow these adjustments. Female times will be further adjusted to the equivalent times of men by multiplying each female time by 0.839. (This number was arrived at by comparing the top male and female time from week number one.) Using these gradings and adjustments all runners are equalized regardless of gender or age. The best runner wins!

About the Series' Scoring
The Lakeview 5K Series uses a unique scoring system. Points are awarded based on a relative merit for a performance based on the fastest runner. The winner receives 1000 points and lesser points are awarded to each finisher based on time. Points are computed by dividing a runners' time into the time of the first place finisher then multiplying by 1000. Weekly results will be posted immediately after each race and on Cool Running. An awards ceremony will be held by 7:15 PM each week.
